What is a template?
A template is the guide rails provided to Contributors or Field Reporters to help them build a compelling story in Folktale.
Folktale templates provide contributors with shot-by-shot guidance comprising story prompts, camera directions, and recommended shot durations.
Each template is designed with a specific title, description, and set of questions to help you collect data efficiently.

Type of templates
- Global templates: Templates that you can utilize when you create a new Story Invitation or Story Preset.
- Custom saved templates: Templates that you have edited and saved when you create a new Story Invitation or Story Preset.
💡 You can customize the template or change the template's language to suit your needs. Please note that the customizing templates feature is available with the Essential and Standard feature plans, while the saving templates feature is available with the Standard feature plan.
Description
Under the type of templates, you can see an overview of the template's purpose. You can also see our recommendations on how to use the template as well as who usually uses this template.
Questions
Each template is home to a list of questions that serve as a guide for people sharing their stories. These questions help them understand the specific story they should tell and any images/videos they may add to support their stories.
Additionally, the template provides information on the recommended duration (20 seconds), the type of shot (interview or mid-range), and who should be featured in the story (the user).
This allows people to create engaging and well-structured stories that align with the data you're trying to collect.
Step One: Go to the Templates page
Once you sign in, click on your workspace name in the left navigation panel (on desktop) or press the menu icon in the top left to expand the panel (on mobile device) and press on your workspace name.

Next, click Template and you'll be taken to the Templates page.
Step Two: View available templates within your workspace
On this page, you will see a list of pre-made templates that are available for you to use for collecting your story.
If you have something in mind that you want to capture from the community, you can search for a template by typing the keyword in the search bar.
For example, you may want to capture a report for your program. You can type "report" in the search box and you will see a list of template that has "report" on it.
To use the template, click on Collect stories using this template. This will take you to another page to create a Story Invitation or a Story Preset with the selected template.
