Subtitle Editor: How to upload subtitle files

A guide for Admins and Insights Managers to upload subtitle files to a language track in a story

Overview

💡Uploading subtitle files is available with the Standard feature plan.

Step One: Select a story

From your Story Library, select a story that you would like to modify. Click on its thumbnail to open the Story Overview page.

Move your cursor over the video player and click the subtitle button at the bottom right. This will open the menu for managing subtitles.

Step Two: Add subtitles

Before uploading, you need to add a language track for your subtitles. Select Add subtitles from the menu.

Select your preferred language and click Create track to continue.

A timeline of subtitles will open beneath the video player. You can scroll left and right to explore the timeline as well as zoom in and out with the - and + icons above.

Step Three: Upload subtitles

Now that you have an empty language track, you can click on the menu button and select Upload subtitles.

A new window will appear, allowing you to browse through your device folders to select a subtitle file for the video. Please make sure that the file is in .vtt/WebVTT format.

Once uploaded, your new subtitle will be available from the subtitle button.

⚠️ Folktale only supports subtitles in the .vtt/WebVTT format. Uploading subtitles in any other format will result in an error.

What is a .vtt/WebVTT file?

A .vtt file, also known as WebVTT, is a file format used to display captions and subtitles. The file contains the text you want to show and specifies the period of time during which the subtitle show should appear in your video.

If your subtitle file is in a different format, ensure the file is in the .vtt/WebVTT format before uploading. Please note that if it's in a Word document, you need to save it as plain text (.txt) first, then convert it to .vtt.

Congratulations! Your subtitle file has been uploaded and is ready to use. As the next step, you can download a subtitle or continue to discover more about Subtitle Editor.
