A guide to record and submit your Folktale story

Step One: Story Title and Story Visibility

Give your story a title by pressing on the box and typing a unique title to your story.

Pressing the Add your location button will tag your city and country to your story. You need to ensure that location permissions are enabled on your device. Please note that adding your location is optional.

If your Insights Manager allows you to share stories with other contributors, you can choose whether you want your story to appear in the Activity Feed or not.

A participant is someone who will be involved in your story.

They could be the person you are interviewing or someone who appears and is identifiable in a shot in your own story.

⚠️ It is important that anyone who is a participant in the story provide informed consent before you start recording.

  1. Press the Add participant button if you have participants in your story.
  2. Explain to them clearly why the story is being collected, how it will be used, and who will be able to see and access their story.
  3. If your organization has uploaded additional consent terms and conditions, these are accessible via the URL.
  4. If your participant consents, have them add their name and location, press on the checkbox, and press I agree.

A list will be generated, displaying all the participants that you have added.

Alternatively, you can also add a participant as you go through each shot by selecting the option to add a new participant.

Step Three: Record your story

To get started, press Record. Make sure you have given permission for Folktale to use your camera.

⚠️ To avoid problems recording and saving clips, please avoid using incognito or private browsing mode.

Here is a description of each button that you will see on the screen:

Flip camera button: Change between the front-facing camera and the rear-facing camera on your device (if your device contains multiple cameras).
Camera button: Press this to turn off the camera and record audio only.
Shutter button: Press once to begin recording and press again to stop.
Photo library button: Import media files from your media library.

Attachment button: Press to attach images or videos that are relevant to your story, making it more engaging.

💡 If you are filming in Landscape mode and notice that the Questions and Timer are sideways, you have to change the Portrait Lock or Auto-rotate settings on your mobile device.

To begin recording, press the Shutter button and start speaking after the countdown. Feel free to speak in any language that you prefer. You also have the option to record audio only by pressing the Camera button on the bottom left.

If you already have footage that you'd like to add to the shot, you can also import media files from your camera roll by pressing the Photo library button on the bottom right.

⚠️ Imported media files must be under 128MB. If a file imported is larger than this limit, please record it directly in Folktale instead of importing it.

After completing the first shot, you will see a green border and a green tick on the right side of your screen. This indicates that the clip has been successfully recorded.

Here is a description of each button that you will see on the screen:
Play button: Rewatch the shot.
Download button: Download the shot.
Rotate button: Adjust the rotation of your shot.
Delete button: Delete the current shot before you re-record.

💡 If you have already taken the shot and noticed that it is not in the right position, you can rotate it by pressing the Rotate button.

Step Four: Add attachments to your story

Press the Attachment button and this will open up options to Record with your camera and Import from your phone or device

⚠️ Imported media files must be under 128MB. If a file imported is larger than this limit, please record it directly in Folktale instead of importing it.

You can combine video recordings with imported images or videos from your device. However, please note that audio from video attachments might not be used in your story. The audio only comes from the main clip.

Step Five: Upload and submit your story

Once you have recorded all your shots, press Upload and build preview to see the whole video. This process will take several minutes depending on your internet connection.

⚠️ Please note that the maximum file size for upload is 384 MB. If you upload a larger video file, the upload may not be successful.

If you found an issue with uploading your shots, check how to troubleshoot errors when uploading a story.

💡 Once all the shots have finished uploading, it is recommended to preview your story by pressing the Play button at the bottom left of your screen. At this stage, you still have the option to redo the video if needed.

In addition, you can add any tags to your story by typing them into the box and then pressing the Add tag button.

These tags provide additional context and information around the story that you feel may be valuable to the Insights Managers.
