Offline Mode

How to capture your story without an internet connection

Overview

What is Offline Mode?

As a Contributor or a Field Reporter, you may find that you need to capture a story when you don't have an internet connection.

Fortunately, Folktale is ready for the challenge! Although Folktale looks and behaves like an ordinary website in your browser, behind the scenes we use all sorts of magic to make the page accessible even when you're offline.

The 3 key actions that you will need an internet connection for are:

  1. Responding to a Story Invitation (Contributor) / Syncing Story Presets (Field Reporter)

  2. Uploading and generating preview

  3. Submitting your story

Everything else can be done while offline.

Step One: Go to the My Stories page

Whilst you still have an internet connection, go to portal.folktale.io to sign in. You will be taken to your My Stories page.

Step Two: Accept the invitation or sync your Story Preset

Contributor

From this page, make sure that you have received and accepted your Story Invitation. In addition, confirm that every story you intend to complete is listed under Pending and labeled as IN PROGRESS.

Field Reporter

Meanwhile, any new or updated Story Presets from your workspace will sync to your browser once you are connected to the internet. Note that to see the Story Presets, you need to be a member of the workspace where the preset was created.

💡 At this stage, you're ready to go offline. Feel free to close the browser and come back when you're ready to record your story.

Step Three: Go to the Create your story page

Once you are out in the field and no longer have internet connectivity, go to portal.folktale.io in your mobile browser.

Even though you are offline, it will still function! You'll see a notice at the bottom of the page letting you know that you are working in offline mode.

If you're using a Story Invitation, press the title to open the invitation details.

If you're using a Story Preset, press the Create story button to begin.

Pressing the title or the Create story button will take you to the Create your story page. At this stage, you are ready to begin recording.

Step Four: Record in Offline mode

When you go offline mode, you can film your story just as you would when you are online. Please note that at this stage, the shot is not yet saved online.

Check our article on Recording and submitting your story to learn more.

Complete all your shots and feel free to close down the browser and come back when you're online.

⚠️ Do not sign out of your Folktale account or clear your browser cache while offline. Signing out of your account will cause you to lose any shots captured that have not been uploaded.

Step Five: Reconnect to the internet

Once you have access to an internet connection, head back to portal.folktale.io on your same device to see a list of your ready-to-be-submitted stories. Press the story title that you'd like to upload and submit.

Step Six: Upload and submit your story

Now that you're online, you will see Upload pending at the bottom of your screen. Press Upload pending to open the option to Upload all changes now

Alternatively, you can also press Upload and build preview to begin the upload procedure of all of your footage. Once that has been completed, your story is saved online and available on any of your devices when you log in.

When you're ready, preview the Personal Information Collection Statement and Intellectual Property Use Terms before you press Submit story.

⚠️ Once a story has been submitted, it cannot be amended.

Congratulations! Your story has been submitted.

Press Back to My Stories to start working on other invitations, or press View My Story to see how the story goes!
