Manage automated captions

A guide for Admins and Insights Managers to adjust automated captions in Project settings and edit captions for accuracy in the subtitle editor

Overview

What is automated captions?

Folktale uses speech recognition technology to detect and transcribe language spoken by a person. The spoken words are displayed as captions at the bottom of the video player.

💡 The captions are generated by machine learning algorithms, therefore the quality can vary. However, these algorithms are constantly improving.

Automated captions are tied to a project and managed by the Admins of a workspace. Admins have options to enable or disable the automated captions, while Insights Managers have access to edit the caption for accuracy in the Subtitle Editor.

Change automated caption settings

When creating a new project, Admins can adjust the automatic caption settings by checking or unchecking the box next to Generate video caption files automatically in this project.

By checking the box, Admins enable the system to automatically generate captions for all stories within the project. To turn off this feature, uncheck the box.

For existing projects, Admins can go to the Project Settings to change the settings. Click on the workspace name, select a specific project, and click Project settings at the bottom.

💡If the automated caption is turned off, stories submitted will have no caption. However, Admins or Insights Managers are able to add the subtitles manually to the video using the Subtitle Editor.

Edit automated caption in the Subtitle Editor

💡 Subtitle Editor is available with the Essential and Standard feature plans.

To ensure the accuracy of the captions, Admins and Insights Managers can edit the automated caption in the subtitle editor.

You can find the story which caption you want to edit in the Story Library or Invitation Overview.

Once found, click on the story and you'll be directed to the Story Overview page. Click the subtitle button at the bottom right of your screen.

This will open up a menu to manage subtitles. To edit the caption, click the pencil button next to the track name.

A timeline of subtitles will open beneath the video player ready to be edited. You can scroll left and right to explore the timeline as well as zoom in and out with the - and + icons above.

You can proceed to add subtitle texts and make any necessary edits. To learn more, check Subtitle Editor: How to edit subtitles.

Congratulations! You have successfully edited and saved your automated captions. As the next step, you can add a new subtitle track to your video, download or upload a subtitle track, or continue to discover more about Subtitle Editor.
